Sesshin is a practice intensive with a strong emphasis on zazen and walking meditation. Sitting periods and long kinhin (walking meditation) are usually 30-35 minutes in sets of 2-3 periods per session. You will be given sitting meditation instruction throughout the retreat and will have an opportunity for an individual interview (Dokusan) with the Teacher.
The typical daily schedule for the Urban Retreat is:
8:15 Walking Meditation
9:15 Community Meeting
1:00 Meditative Walk & Lunch
4:30 Zazen & Dharma Talk
7:30 Walking Meditation
You will enjoy healthy and nutritious meals during the retreat. Meals are largely vegetarian, with some other protein options at lunch.
The meditative walk on Friday or Saturday will include a vegetarian/vegan lunch at a local restaurant. The cost of the lunch is included in the retreat fee.
Main courses are mostly vegetarian with other protein options available at lunch. Everyone is served the same meal. If you have medically necessary dietary restrictions, such as strictly gluten-free or lactose-free, we ask that you bring your own food to supplement. We will have gluten-free cereals available at breakfast and a limited supply of other gluten-free items at other meals. A medically diagnosed allergy to seafood or nuts requires that you inform us, and maintain your own rescue medication, such as an epi-pen.
We regret we are not able to prepare special meals for individuals or provide refrigerated food storage in the kitchen.
Parking is free at Artspace Zendo. Ask for a TAZ parking sticker to use Visitor parking spaces in front of the Artspace Building and parking in the Macaroni Flats lot next door to the south. The sticker is free and must be visible on the driver side windshield of your vehicle to assure that parking enforcement can see your authorization to park after hours and for extended periods.
